Original glaze was developed at Miyasou Pottery Studio. – Our concept is to optimize Kutani ware traditions for contemporary interiors and lifestyles, enabling color variations previously unseen in Kutani ware. We have developed glazes by reusing residual clay—impurities removed during the process of transforming pottery stone into Kutani ware clay (kaido). These glazes produce a matte, textured finish uncommon in Kutani ware, intended for use on decorative items and interior pieces. Centered around the five basic colors (blue, red, yellow, white, black), we offer a wide range of colors including pastel tones (soft colors) and vivid tones (bright colors). We develop products in your desired color.
Reusing clay production waste – Miyasou Pottery is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Kutani ware is considered the pinnacle of colored porcelain, praised in the West during the Meiji period as “Japan Kutani.” It utilizes pottery stone discovered in the late Edo period in the Hanasaka district of Komatsu City. While most pieces feature painted designs on a glossy base coated with transparent glaze, the glaze used this time is a matte-textured glaze developed to reuse resources that become waste during production because they cannot be used in the final product, thereby helping to improve and solve waste issues. We utilized residual clay generated during the clay-making process from Hanasaka raw stone quarries in Hachiman, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. This clay is sourced from Hanasaka ceramic stone. We studied glaze techniques from scratch at the Ishikawa Prefectural Kutani Ware Technical Training Institute and the Kutani Ware Technical Center, striving to develop a new expression for Kutani ware. By establishing an integrated process covering everything from prototype creation to base material production using Hanasaka ceramic stone and glaze coloring, we can efficiently advance projects from planning to commercialization. This enables not only the development of Kutani figurines but also products highly compatible with miscellaneous goods and interior items, facilitating cross-industry collaborations.
Contemporary writers, cross-industry collaborations – The advanced technical expertise passed down at Miyasou Ceramics Studio, combined with the capabilities—such as product development and customer attraction—that we ourselves lack, enables collaborations with contemporary artists possessing these strengths and professionals from other industries. This partnership creates unprecedented new products and services, unlocking unique product development through this “new value.” Consumer needs and values are diversifying. We will respond to these diverse needs by developing even more appealing and valuable products.
We are currently working diligently on developing products through joint ventures and creating original items. Progress updates will be shared on our Instagram. Additionally, our color-matching capabilities allow for a wide range of color variations, so we are also seeking collaborations with companies.
